1998 Honda Civic EK3 VTi – D15B 3-Stage VTEC – 5-Speed Manual – 85K Miles!

This is a Japanese-market 1998 Honda Civic EK3 VTi, right-hand drive, with 85,144 miles and a 5-speed manual transmission. Under the hood is one of the more interesting engines from Honda’s 1990s economy-performance era: the 1.5-liter D15B 3-Stage VTEC.

Honda’s 3-Stage VTEC system was designed to do more than simply switch to a more aggressive cam profile at higher RPM. The system could alter valve operation depending on engine speed and load, allowing the D15B to prioritize fuel economy during light-load driving while still delivering the higher-RPM response associated with VTEC.

That technology makes the Japanese-market EK3 interesting today. While the EK Civic itself is well known in the U.S., the D15B 3-Stage VTEC drivetrain was never a normal U.S.-market Civic offering. Finding one here in its original Japanese-market, right-hand-drive configuration with a 5-speed manual is considerably less common than finding a standard U.S.-spec EK.

The car was originally silver and was changed to black while still in Japan. It has been lightly modified with Rota alloy wheels, a front lip, mesh grille, and Momo steering wheel, giving it a clean period-inspired appearance without dramatically changing the character of the car.
