There are low mile no mile cars...and then there are the ones that make you wonder how somebody could possibly resist driving them.
This 2002 Chrysler 300M Special is one of those cars.
Finished in beautiful Black, showing just 4,838 miles, and equipped with Chrysler's high-output 3.5-liter V6, this is an extraordinary example of one of the most distinctive American luxury sport sedans of the early 2000s.
And the story behind those miles?
Well, that's our favorite part.
The original owner purchased this 300M brand new and simply couldn't bring herself to drive it regularly.
She thought it was too nice.
So instead of putting it into everyday service, she saved it for beautiful Michigan afternoons.
Her favorite outing was a leisurely drive from her home in Sterling Heights to St. Clair, Michigan, where she would park by the St. Clair River, enjoy an ice cream cone, and eventually head home to put her Chrysler away.
That was her idea of a perfect day.
More than two decades later, the result is a remarkably preserved 300M Special that still looks and feels exceptionally close to new.
Introduced during the 2002 model year, the Chrysler 300M Special was designed to take the already impressive 300M and give it a considerably more aggressive personality.
Chrysler wasn't content with simply adding a badge.
The Special received a comprehensive collection of performance, styling, and luxury enhancements that distinguished it from the standard model.
Under the hood sits the high-output 3.5-liter SOHC 24-valve V6, producing 255 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Power is delivered to the front wheels through Chrysler's four-speed AutoStick automatic transmission, allowing either conventional automatic operation or driver-selected shifts.
The Special also received a revised 3.89 final-drive ratio, performance-tuned suspension, firmer steering, upgraded braking components, and a lowered ride height.
Visually, Chrysler gave the car an entirely different attitude.
Unique front and rear ground effects, lower body cladding, a rear spoiler, dual exhaust outlets integrated into the rear fascia, distinctive Special badging, and beautiful 18-inch alloy wheels create a much sportier appearance.
High-intensity discharge headlights and additional exterior details further distinguish the Special from an ordinary 300M.
Inside, Chrysler continued the theme with premium leather seating, unique trim accents, and an impressive assortment of luxury features.
This particular example is especially well equipped, including a power sunroof and premium Infinity audio system.
It represented Chrysler's attempt to combine traditional American luxury with a genuinely sporty driving experience.
And in Black, the entire package looks fantastic.
The Story
Some collector cars survive because they were purchased as investments.
Others survive because someone simply loved them too much to wear them out.
This Chrysler belongs to the second category.
Purchased new by a woman living in Sterling Heights, Michigan, the 300M Special was her pride and joy from the very beginning.
According to the seller, she explained that the car was simply too beautiful to drive every day.
She loved everything about it and couldn't bring herself to accumulate unnecessary miles.
So she didn't.
Instead, the Chrysler became her special-occasion automobile.
On a sunny afternoon, she would take it out of storage and enjoy a relaxing drive northeast toward the small waterfront community of St. Clair.
Once there, she would park near the St. Clair River, get herself an ice cream cone, enjoy the scenery, and eventually make the drive back home.
No long road trips.
No daily commuting.
Just an occasional afternoon enjoying a car she was proud to own.
It's such a simple story, but it's one that perfectly explains how a vehicle like this survives.
She didn't need a destination hundreds of miles away to enjoy her Chrysler.
Sometimes a little sunshine, a beautiful car, and an ice cream by the river were enough.
Over the course of her ownership, she accumulated only approximately 4,700 miles.
The selling dealership recently acquired the vehicle directly from her, bringing an end to its remarkable original-owner history.
And perhaps most fittingly, the dealership is located in St. Clair, the very town she had enjoyed visiting in her beloved Chrysler for so many years.
It's a wonderful connection between the car's past and its next chapter.
The condition of this 300M Special is exceptional.
The Black exterior retains a beautiful finish, with the body panels, trim, lighting, and factory wheels all presenting in outstanding condition.
Because Black paint can reveal even the smallest imperfections, the seller had a professional single-stage paint correction performed to address light towel marks and swirl scratches.
The results are impressive.
The paint now displays a deep, glossy appearance that beautifully complements the Special's aggressive factory styling.
The body retains its original overall appearance, with only a few minor cosmetic imperfections noted.
Some small touch-up areas are present, including a few on the passenger-side rear quarter panel where a minor ding was previously addressed through paintless dent repair. The repair may have disturbed the paint slightly, requiring touch-up work.
These areas are subtle and not particularly noticeable during a casual inspection.
A few minor rock chips and other small signs of age and road use are also present.
The factory 18-inch alloy wheels remain in excellent condition, as do the exterior lights, trim, and ground effects.
The underside is exceptionally clean, reflecting the limited use and careful preservation this Chrysler has received throughout its life.
Interior — Remarkably Close to New
Opening the door of this 300M is like stepping back into a Chrysler showroom in 2002.
The premium leather upholstery remains beautifully preserved, with plush seating surfaces showing remarkably little evidence of use.
The carpeting is exceptionally clean and free of stains, while the dashboard, center console, door panels, and interior trim present in similarly impressive condition.
Even the trunk looks practically untouched.
The Special's upscale interior includes premium leather seating, power-adjustable heated front seats, driver memory settings, automatic climate control, power accessories, cruise control, and Chrysler's distinctive interior appointments.
The power sunroof adds to the luxury experience.
One of the standout features is the premium Infinity II audio system, originally designed with 11 speakers, 360 watts of power, and an in-dash four-disc CD changer.
It's the kind of sound system that was a major selling point when this car was new.
Combined with the comfortable seating, generous passenger room, and upscale appointments, the interior reminds you just how luxurious these cars were for their time.
Mechanical Condition & Recent Service
Under the hood, the high-output 3.5-liter V6 engine compartment presents in exceptionally clean condition.
The engine, surrounding components, and under hood finishes reflect the vehicle's extremely limited use.
The seller reports that the car runs and drives beautifully.
Recent maintenance includes fluid service, new front brakes and installation of a new battery.
With only approximately 4,838 miles accumulated since new, the vehicle has experienced a fraction of the use typically associated with a 2002 model-year automobile.
As with any low-mileage vehicle of this age, prospective buyers should consider the effects of time and extended storage when planning future use.
Documentation & Included Items
The Chrysler is accompanied by its original owner's manuals, both keys, and original window sticker.
These items provide an additional connection to the car's original purchase and help complete the experience of owning such a remarkably preserved example.
You know what we love about cars like this?
Sometimes the story behind the mileage is even better than the mileage itself.
And this 2002 Chrysler 300M Special has one of those stories that just makes you smile.
Imagine walking into a Chrysler dealership back in 2002.
You want something nice.
Something comfortable.
Something with a little performance.
And then you see this Black 300M Special sitting on the showroom floor.
The wheels.
The body kit.
The dual exhaust.
The leather interior.
That big 3.5-liter high-output V6.
It was a pretty serious car for its day.
So you buy it.
You bring it home.
You admire it in the driveway.
And then you realize something.
You like it so much that you don't really want to drive it.
That's essentially what happened here.
The original owner told the seller that she simply thought her Chrysler was too nice to put miles on.
And she meant it.
Over more than two decades, she accumulated just 4,838 miles.
But our favorite part isn't that she barely drove it.
It's what she did when she actually took it out.
She lived in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and on a beautiful sunny day, she'd hop in her 300M and take a little drive out to St. Clair.
She'd park near the river.
Get herself an ice cream cone.
Enjoy the afternoon.
And then head back home and put the car away.
That's it.
No cross-country adventures.
No daily commute.
Just a beautiful Chrysler, a sunny afternoon, and an ice cream cone overlooking the St. Clair River.
We absolutely love that.
And here's the funny part.
The selling dealership that eventually acquired her Chrysler is located right there in St. Clair.
The same little town she'd been visiting all those years.
You couldn't make up a more fitting connection.
Now, we have to talk about the car itself.
Because the 300M Special was a seriously cool piece of Chrysler history.
Remember when Chrysler was building cars that looked like nothing else on the road?
The Intrepid.
The Concorde.
The LHS.
The 300M.
Those long, low, cab-forward sedans were everywhere in the late '90s and early 2000s.
And then Chrysler decided to make a performance-oriented version of the 300M.
Not just a badge package, either.
A hotter V6.
Bigger wheels.
Dual exhaust.
Upgraded suspension and brakes.
A lower stance.
Unique ground effects.
And an interior loaded with the kind of luxury features that made you feel like you were driving something genuinely special.
It was Chrysler having a little fun.
And in Black?
Man, these things looked good.
But let's be serious.
How many of them survived?
Most were driven every day.
They racked up miles.
They saw winters.
They got traded in, passed around, and eventually disappeared.
That's just what happens to normal production cars.
Nobody really thinks twice about them until they're gone.
And then one day, a car like this shows up.
Original owner.
4,838 miles.
Leather that looks like it was barely sat in.
Carpeting that looks practically untouched.
An engine compartment that still has that remarkably fresh appearance.
And Black paint that shines beautifully.
It's almost hard to believe.
Sure, there's a little touch-up here and a rock chip there.
It's a 24-year-old automobile, after all.
But the overall preservation is remarkable.
And that's what gets us excited.
Because these are the cars that are quietly disappearing from automotive history.
They weren't six-figure collectibles when they were new.
They weren't stored away because somebody expected them to become the next big investment.
They were simply loved.
And sometimes that's all it takes.
We have a tremendous amount of respect for people like this car's original owner.
People who buy something they genuinely enjoy and care for it over the years, even when the rest of the world sees it as just another used car.
Without those people, vehicles like this wouldn't exist anymore.
And now someone gets the opportunity to experience a 2002 Chrysler 300M Special in a condition that's becoming increasingly difficult to find.
We hope the next owner appreciates the history behind this car.
And maybe they'll even continue the tradition.
Take it out on a sunny afternoon.
Find a nice spot overlooking the water.
Grab an ice cream cone.
And enjoy the fact that sometimes the simplest little things make the best memories.
Because that's what this Chrysler's original owner did.
And more than two decades later, we're still talking about it.
That's pretty special.
And so is this car.
